Kindle DX Graphite

Amazon has announced a brand new Kindle DX. It sports a graphite colored case:

Graphite Kindle

Some people have wondered why Amazon has changed the Kindle’s color. While I do not know their true reasons, I do suspect that the new color improves the device’s readability. I tend to mainly use my Kindle when I’m reading in bright sunlight. The Kindle’s current white case reflects much more light than its somewhat darker screen. At times, the contrast between the case and the screen is almost painful, and makes it harder to read on the Kindle:

The graphite case should fix this problem.

If you liked this, you'll love my book. It's called Designed for Use: Create Usable Interfaces for Applications and the Web. In it, I cover the whole design process, from user research and sketching to usability tests and A/B testing. But I don't just explain techniques, I also talk about concepts like discoverability, when and how to use animations, what we can learn from video games, and much more.

You can find out more about it (and order it directly, printed or as a DRM-free ebook) on the Pragmatic Programmers website.
